Killerton Harvest
Killerton has been growing apples for a very long time, and each October the estate makes a proper fuss of the harvest. For nine days the working side of the estate comes to the front: the cider barn, the old press, vintage farm machinery, and stalls of produce grown and made nearby.
The pressing is the heart of it. Watching apples turn into juice under a press that has outlived generations of gardeners is oddly absorbing, and the Morris dancing and folk music drifting across the grounds give the week a properly old-fashioned mood. Families will find plenty to do without it feeling staged, and the parkland is at its best in early October when the colour starts to turn.
There are related days worth knowing about within the same window, including an apple-picking session on Sunday 11 October for people who'd like to lend a hand with the fruit itself. Killerton is around eight miles from Cullompton, so an afternoon here fits comfortably around a relaxed breakfast at The Roost.
