Some bands are made for a sit-down concert. Mad Dog Mcrea are not one of them. The West Country folk-rock outfit have built a loyal following on energetic, foot-stomping sets that blend folk, bluegrass, gypsy jazz and good old-fashioned singalong choruses, and their weekenders have become a fixture for fans across the South West.

For 2027 they are bringing the party to Exeter Phoenix, the city's lively arts centre just off Gandy Street, for two nights at the end of March. Spreading it over a weekend gives the event the feel of a mini-festival, with a crowd that tends to know every word and is not shy about dancing.

If you have never seen them before, this is a great introduction: an intimate venue, a band clearly enjoying itself and an audience that makes newcomers feel welcome. The Phoenix is right in the centre of Exeter, about twenty-five minutes from The Roost, so it is easy to make a weekend of it, with a late breakfast and an unhurried drive home the morning after.
